VOW RENEWALS

You’ve already had the wedding. You’ve already made the promises.

And then life happened. That’s precisely what makes a vow renewal so special.

It isn’t about pretending you’re back at the beginning.

It’s about celebrating everything that’s happened since.

The people standing together now aren’t exactly the same people who originally said “I do”.

You’ve lived. You’ve changed.

There may have been children, new homes, adventures, losses, challenges, ridiculous arguments, enormous achievements and ordinary Tuesday mornings. A vow renewal gives you the opportunity to recognise all of it.

There doesn’t need to be a grand reason.

Perhaps it’s a significant anniversary or maybe you’ve come through something difficult together. Perhaps you’re bringing families together again.

You may have had a tiny legal wedding the first time round and now want the celebration you never had.

Or perhaps you simply looked at each other and thought, “Shall we do this again?“

Just like my wedding ceremonies, every vow renewal is created from scratch. We’ll talk about where you began and where life has taken you. We’ll decide which parts of the original wedding you’d like to revisit and which belong firmly in the past.

And we’ll create something that celebrates your relationship as it exists now.

What can we include?

Promises made with the considerable advantage of actually knowing what living together involves.

Children, grandchildren, friends and chosen family can all play a part.

A handfasting can be a lovely way to symbolically bind your lives together again.

Music, readings, photographs, stories or elements from your original wedding can all be incorporated.

Ready to say it again?

Let’s celebrate where you’ve been, who you’ve become and whatever comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to renew our vows on a particular anniversary?

Not at all. Five, ten, and twenty-five years, along with other significant anniversaries, are popular. But, there are no rules. You can renew your vows whenever it feels meaningful for you.

Do we need to be legally married to have a vow renewal?

A vow renewal is a symbolic ceremony rather than a legal one, so there is no legal process involved. We’ll focus on celebrating your relationship, your story and the promises you want to make to each other now.

Do we have to repeat our original wedding vows?

No. You can if those words still hold special meaning for you, but you can also write completely new vows that reflect everything you’ve experienced together since your wedding.

There is something rather lovely about making promises when you both know each other considerably better than you did the first time.

Can our children or grandchildren be involved?

Absolutely. One of the loveliest things about a vow renewal is that the people who weren’t part of your original wedding may now be a huge part of your celebration. Children, grandchildren, family and friends can all be involved if you’d like them to be.

Can we include a handfasting in our vow renewal?

Yes. Rebinding your hands can powerfully symbolise the promises you’re making again and the life you’ve built together.

Where can we hold our vow renewal?

Almost anywhere practical, provided you have permission. It could be your garden, a woodland, a favourite beach, the place where you originally married, or somewhere entirely new that has become important to you.
