Wedding celebrant Essex

Forget how a wedding ceremony is supposed to look for a moment.

What would yours look like? Would you gather beneath the trees or walk into the ceremony together? Exchange traditional vows, write your own, bind your hands, jump a broom, include your children or ask your friends to tell embarrassing stories?

With a celebrant-led wedding, you’re no longer trying to fit yourselves into a ceremony. We build the ceremony around you.

Your wedding, Not everybody else’s

Wedding celebrant Essex

I love celebrating love in all of its multifaceted and multi coloured glory, whatever form that might take for you.

Quirky, romantic, chilled, spiritual, geeky, wildly theatrical or wonderfully simple.

There is no prescribed order your ceremony has to follow.

Music, readings, vows, ring exchanges, handfasting, symbolic rituals and contributions from the people around you can all form part of it.

Or none of them.

We’ll work out what belongs.

And leave out everything that doesn’t.

My existing services follow this exact approach, with couples choosing the structure, readings, rituals, vows and tone themselves.

Written completely from scratch

Your ceremony starts with a conversation.

I’ll get to know you both, how you met, the life you’ve created, what matters to you and the stories that deserve a place in the ceremony.

I’ll also send you a questionnaire because sometimes the answers people write separately reveal the loveliest things.

Then I start writing.

You get to read the draft, make comments and suggest changes.

It is your ceremony, so nothing is hidden from you unless of course, we’ve deliberately planned a surprise.

How you met, what brought you together and the wonderfully ridiculous little things that make your relationship yours.

I’ll help you explore what you want to promise each other and can work with you on creating vows that actually sound like words you’d say.

Handfasting, jumping the broom, ring warming, elemental rituals and other symbolic acts can all add meaning to your ceremony.

Children, parents, friends and chosen family can all take part.

And yes, your pets can too.

Music, readings and completely unexpected things

This is the advantage of creating a ceremony from scratch.

We’re not choosing from Menu A, B or C.

A celebrant-led wedding is not currently a legal marriage ceremony in England and Wales.

You will need to complete the statutory legal requirements separately via the registration service.

Many couples choose to keep that legal appointment very simple and then treat their celebrant led ceremony as the occasion where they gather everyone together, exchange their personal vows and celebrate their marriage in the way they actually want. Essex County Council confirms that a registrar is required for the legal marriage or civil partnership process.

That separation also gives us considerably more freedom over your ceremony’s location, content and style.

We’ll have the meetings we need, either face-to-face or online.

I’ll send you your questionnaire, create your first draft and work through changes with you.

Depending on the package you choose, we can also have a dedicated vow-writing session.

Where appropriate, we’ll arrange a rehearsal too.

Rehearsals aren’t about turning the ceremony into a military operation.

They’re about everyone knowing where they’re going and removing enough uncertainty that you can actually enjoy the moment.

I plan to arrive at least an hour before your ceremony.

That gives me time to liaise with the venue and other suppliers, make sure everything is where it needs to be and deal with any last-minute wobbles before you arrive.

Then we do the important bit.

We get you wed in every way that matters to you and the people gathered around you.

A completely bespoke ceremony written and delivered for you.

Your bespoke ceremony plus dedicated help creating personal vows.

Everything above plus support coordinating the celebrations after your ceremony through to your first dance.

What are your plans?

Frequently asked questions

Is a celebrant wedding legally binding?

A celebrant-led wedding ceremony is not a legal marriage ceremony in England and Wales. You will need to complete the legal requirements separately, usually through your local registration service. This leaves us free to create your Oak & Thorn ceremony around you, without being restricted by any format of the legal ceremony.

Can we write our own wedding vows?

Absolutely. In fact, I encourage it if it feels right for you. Your vows can be heartfelt, funny, simple, spiritual or a mixture of everything. If staring at a blank sheet of paper fills you with horror, I can help you find the words and make sure they still sound like you.

Can we include a handfasting in our wedding?

Yes. A handfasting can form one part of your wider wedding ceremony and can work beautifully alongside your vows and ring exchange. It can be deeply Pagan and spiritual or simply a meaningful symbolic ritual. We’ll create it around what it means to you.

Can family, friends or children be involved in the ceremony?

Definitely. They might give a reading, take part in a ritual, help with your handfasting cords or contribute in another way entirely. We’ll find ways to involve the people who matter without making anyone feel as though they’ve suddenly been given a starring role they didn’t ask for.

Can our dog be involved?

If your venue is happy and your dog is likely to enjoy the experience, absolutely. Pets are family too. We can find a role for them or simply make sure they’re there to witness everything. I can’t guarantee they’ll stick to the script though.

Can we have our wedding ceremony outdoors?

Yes. Woodlands, gardens, fields and other outdoor spaces can make wonderful settings for celebrant ceremonies, subject to permission from whoever owns or manages the location. We’ll also make a sensible Plan B because, beautiful though the British countryside is, the weather has never shown much respect for wedding plans.
